WARDOGS best way to build a SAM site guide

A good SAM site needs two things that compete with each other: a clear view of the sky and enough protection to survive enemy ground pressure. Putting the launcher on the highest exposed hill may improve coverage, but it also makes the entire site easy to find and destroy.

Choose the location for air coverage first

Look for a position with broad visibility over the air approaches helicopters actually use. Nearby mountains, tall buildings and steep terrain can create dead zones. You want the SAM to see aircraft before they are directly on top of the base.

Do not put the whole site on the skyline

A slightly lower position with strong sky coverage can be better than the most obvious peak. Use terrain and walls to hide the supporting structures from ground vehicles and infantry while keeping the launcher itself able to engage aircraft.

Separate critical components

Do not cluster the launcher, supplies, spawn and every support structure into one explosive target. Give the site enough spacing that a mortar or artillery strike cannot damage everything at once.

Control ground access

Helicopters are not the only threat. Fast infantry and vehicles will try to destroy a SAM position once it becomes a problem. Use gates, barriers, HESCO-style walls and vehicle obstacles to slow ground attackers.

Protect repair access

Builders need to reach the launcher and surrounding defenses without standing completely exposed. Leave a protected path and enough room to repair damaged sections from inside the perimeter.

Plan ammunition and resupply

A SAM site that runs dry is just an expensive landmark. Keep a practical logistics route open. If the position is far from the main base, make sure trucks or aircraft can reach it without navigating an impossible maze of walls.

Add observation

Use teammates, spotting and visual observation to warn the site before aircraft arrive. A pilot that knows a SAM exists may approach low behind terrain, so watch likely masking routes and call them out early.

Do not fire from the exact same pattern forever

Once enemy pilots know the site location, they may coordinate ground attacks, long-range fire or terrain-masking approaches. Strengthen the weak side, add supporting defenses and be willing to rebuild in a better location if the position has become predictable.

Simple SAM site checklist

  • Clear view of common helicopter approaches.
  • No unnecessary skyline exposure.
  • Ground barriers and controlled access.
  • Critical components spread apart.
  • Protected repair route.
  • Reliable ammunition and supply access.
  • Friendly spotting or observation.

FAQ

Should a SAM always be on the highest hill?

No. Coverage matters, but the highest hill can also be the easiest place for the enemy to identify and attack.

What is the biggest SAM-site mistake?

Building the launcher without thinking about ground defense, repair access and resupply.
